Hello Praveen,

welcome in the forum.

So, to assess the situation better, there is need of more info.
E.g. where you would like to improve or be good in.
What do you know already? what are your experiences?
So do not make an ad here for your CV now, just a short info, so we know, where to categorize you (ups, such a bad word but you know patterns help to make the world easier).

So, to give you a few areas in advance (just in case):
more about processes, management, test tools, design techniques, skills,...
There are much more, but better you tell, where you want to become professional, so we can guide.

BTW:
who says, that we are experts, perhaps you can guide too?
Remember: life is too short to learn everything, we focus mostly in some few areas in our life/profession,
so we can learn from each other a lot of things.

Just take for example Socrates, he always said:
I know that I know nothing.
And he was right.
Always discussing with other people helps a lot (to improve).
Did you read my notes at the main page about the chain reaction? Together people can achieve big things (imagine: for India the 15th August was very powerful - do you think, one person alone could have achieved this?).

CU,
Erkan

Hi Erkan,

First of all thanks a lot for your reply.

Here I am going to describe briefly about myself and I hope that will help you to help me better.

I finished my three-year course of Diploma in Comp. Engg. and know some prog. languages like C, C++, VB, etc. But unfortunately my knowledge in software testing is zero but have a strong desire to learn it as soon as possible and I am ready to work hard to accomplish that and I hope I reached the right place for that. If you have any materials to help me for that, please forward and also give me an outline about how I want to start.... from where I want to start... etc.

Hope that you can understand my situations...

Regards,
Praveen

Hello Praveen,

thank you for the info.

But unfortunately my knowledge in software testing is zero
Well, in my opinion we all test always in our lives, willingly or unwillingly. So, I am sure that you already tested (software). But of course everybody can improve his/her techniques to be more efficient.

To do this there are several possibilities like:

1.
Why don't you join an open source community?
There you have the SDLC, you have developers, testers, ... you learn the tools used in testing,...
That is one start.
Of course this would be without knowing something from the testing process/techniques/theory,
but it could give you a view into the testing field.
Because without working knowledge, how do you know, that testing is the right choice for you?
I think people should know what they are going to expect from testing.
And well with that you also help the open source community.
Give the community back, what they have given you. Just take one of the open source applications you use at the moment and help to improve it.

2.
To get more knowledge on theory, read (more than) 1 book about software testing. There are so many good books available.
So, how to determine which is good?
go to e.g. Amazon, have a look at the reviews and you know what book is assessed good by many.
hint: amazon also offers the option "search inside" the book.
And there are lots of reviews also in the WWW available.

Here for example you have a complete course with videos on Black-Box-Testing by Cem Kaner:
www.testingeducation.org/BBST/index.html

3.
But of course there are many areas, the books cover, so either you take a general one or:
why don't you have a look at the videos here?
www.skilledtester.de/component/option,com_joomlaboard/Itemid,52/func,view/id,79/catid,5/

So, you could figure out, which topic may be of interest for you - where you can specialize.
From what you said, perhaps white box testing, unit testing is something for you? So, you could perhaps concentrate on videos about source code first?
Or you just google for the terms and you will find enough material.

A request by me:
If you know other videos, why don't you help me?
Add them there or tell me.
Then others can use this info.
e.g perhaps there are even better videos available somewhere than the already collected ones?

Well, what to do, if you do not know any video?
No prob: there is also a solution to this
why don't you watch one and give your feedback on it?
e.g. what didn't you like in that special video x?
what did you like most?

4.
If you do not have the money to buy a book:
there are many discussion groups/articles online, which focus on testing especially.
You know, everything was asked/told already once before, prob is to find this info.
So you could also have a look there and read first some postings and so you can get to know step by step topics from testing:

good sources are:
www.StickyMinds.com
www.sqaforums.com
www.testingreflections.com
There are also these groups available:
tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/CSTE/
tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/ISTQB-India/
Also have a look on this site, perhaps you get inspired for other ideas

I hope I have given you some hints, but of course there are more ways, but for a start these can be entry points.

to all: If you think there is a URL missing that should be included or other info, please add your views.

Sincerely,
Erkan YILMAZ

Hello Praveen,

sure -
if you want, you can share your experiences later too.
Might be interesting for others also.

Bye,
Erkan
