Please do not see the following as critique on your person or so. Just some general thought of how to improve things.
So I guess in the end you learned mainly alone? (Of course there can be used online groups like CSTE study group international for getting more knowledge.) This is - in this point - similar to the ISTQB Certified Tester. People can pass the exam by self-study mostly.
But what do you think on such intiatives? www.satisfice.com/blog/archives/79 (ok, this one is in the end also not free, but there are other initiatives).
It is a step forward in improving the knowledge/skills. But still better I think is when asking someone face to face (like: pair testing,...).
But I guess in these global times getting people with various background from many countries together is hard But in the end this makes sure, that if A has a prob, then (s)he can ask perhaps B or C. Practical knowledge can be shared. And then also A can give feedback later to B or C.
So everybody would profit (if we see this now as win and loss). In the end overall-quality woudl increase and hopefully there will be more "testers" around.
This probably now sounds like general blabla, but feel free to contribute.
