as starting point for the ISTQB exams I would recommend following (besides reading the syllabus of each exam):
for Foundation Level:
book from Spillner, Linz:
the English one is: Andreas Spillner, Tilo Linz, Hans Schäfer. (2006). Software Testing Foundations - A Study Guide for the Certified Tester Exam - Foundation Level - ISTQB compliant, 1st print. dpunkt.verlag GmbH, Heidelberg, Germany. ISBN 3-89864-363-8. here you can find some pages of the book in PDF: www.dpunkt.de/buecher/3-89864-363-8.html
the German one is: Andreas Spillner, Tilo Linz: Basiswissen Softwaretest - Basiswissen Softwaretest: Aus- und Weiterbildung zum Certified Tester: Foundation Level nach ISTQB-Standard. 3., überarbeitete und aktualisierte Auflage, dpunkt.verlag GmbH, Heidelberg 2005, ISBN 3-89864-358-1. here you can find some pages of the book in PDF: www.dpunkt.de/buecher/3-89864-358-1.html
see here: www.skilledtester.de/andreas_spillner.html
for Advanced Level:
1. read the following books:
a. Erik van Veenendaal (ed. and author). (2005). The Testing Practitioner, 3rd run. UTN Publishers, CN Den Bosch, the Netherlands. ISBN 90-72194-65-9. for buying: see "information on the expert level (CTEL)" in www.skilledtester.de/istqb_certified_testers.html www.skilledtester.de/erik_van_veenendaal.html
b. Andreas Spillner, Tilo Linz, Thomas Roßner, Mario Winter. (2006). Praxiswissen Softwaretest - Testmanagement: Aus- und Weiterbildung zum Certified Tester: Advanced Level nach ISTQB-Standard, 1st run. dpunkt.verlag GmbH, Heidelberg, Germany. ISBN 3-89864-275-5. www.skilledtester.de/andreas_spillner.html here you can find some pages of the book in PDF: www.dpunkt.de/buecher/3-89864-275-5.html
2. release of new Advanced Level syllabus: march 2007 it is planned to release the new Advanced Level Syllabus responsible for this: Bernard Homes from the French Testing Board www.cftl.net
for the Foundation Level also an update is planned: responsible person: Thomas Müller from the Swiss Testing Board www.swiss-testing-board.ch
what is to be changed in the Foundation Level? comments of the national testing boards and training providers are considered to the actual version. -> It is told, that there is NO change on the courseware or the exam topics (but who knows now ).
(date of info: 2006 October)
3. also you can find on this website some comments - just surf around or ask me: www.skilledtester.de/contact_us
4. from the mailinglist Yahoo Group - ISTQB-India (tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/ISTQB-India ) I have following info (you can also search in the archive there, perhaps you can gather other info)
>It is very important to understand the concept very well.
> 1. Functional tester emphasizes on the types of > Testing in Blackbox, Test tools, Test plan contents > etc.. Basically in this module you apply the > terminologies what you have studied for Foundation > level. I know this very well coz I cleared this exam > in July.
> > Functional tester exam is not as difficult as > > Foundation exam.
> 2. Test Management: > Through my collegue I came to > know that there are lot of Definitions and > memorisation required which might be confusing..
>Also Test manager, is not difficult but very confusing.
> 3. Technical tester covers more about white box > testing I suppose and is the most difficult one
> > Its better that you do > > your own study and give exam instead of taking > > course. If you take up course, its 4 days course > > where on the 4th day you have to appear in exam and > > you have very less time to prepare.
